Bol lamps are participating the Jätkäsaaren joulumakasiini (Isle of Jack Xmas fair) on Sunday 11 December, 12-6 pm.

The market brings together local designers, artists and brands such as Pelago Bicycles, Napa Books+Illustrations, Fem collective, Grey Market, Katariina Guthwert, Napa Books, and Nopsa Fashion Library. We are taking over the great empty halls of the L3 warehouse in Jätkäsaari. Christmas porridge, glögi and locally roasted coffee also available. The event is organised by Urban Dream Management and Pelago. Welcome!

Helsinki Beyond Dreams

For the past year or so, the Urban Dream Management team has been busy with our forthcoming book.

Titled Helsinki Beyond Dreams, the book is about emerging local cultures and how they make a difference. We’ve invited a culturally varied group of urban activists, theorists and designers to share their views around the theme. We can’t wait to get all the inspiring stories and the rich photography out and published!

The book will be available in March/April 2012. It is also part of the official program of World Design Capital Helsinki 2012. Stay alert, more information will follow.

The book 20+12 Design Stories from Helsinki presents Helsinki through the eyes of architects, designers and artists. The book by Katja Hagelstam, Piëtke Visser and Eva Lamppu features interviews and mini-essays by a range of Helsinki-based creative professionals, including also my essay. Under the title “A City in the Grip of Change” (or “Kaupunki murroksessa” in Finnish) I wrote about the recent breakthrough of urban cultures in Helsinki. You’ll be able to read more about local cultures also in the forthcoming book Helsinki Beyond Dreams by Urban Dream Management, available March/April 2012.

Finland Apartments by Paumes

Last summer the Japanese editor Coco Tashima and photographer Hisashi Tokuoyshi knocked on my door and came for a visit. My home is now featured in the adorable book Finland Apartments by Coco’s and Hisashi’s publishing house Edition Paumes. Finland Apartments takes you on a tour to 16 inspiring homes of creative minds in Helsinki. The book, published in August 2011, is already the second book about Finnish homes by Paumes, and also their third one, Finland Chidren’s rooms has just been released.

Paumes’ books are available in Helsinki at Akateeminen kirjakauppa, Napa and other selected bookshops.

Finnish Design Shop + Lumi

Bol lamps are now available at Finnish Design Shop, the webshop representing a wide range of products at the top of Finnish design. Their renewed website offers also a lot of interesting information and background behind the products and their designers.

During the christmas season, Bol can be spotted live at the heart of Helsinki. The Bol Snowball lamps are featured at Lumi Accessories‘ 10th anniversary exhibition and Pop up Shop at Kämp Galleria, 2nd floor. The exhibition is open from 17 November 2010 until 15 January 2011, weekdays 11-20 and Saturdays 11-17.

BerliNordik: Sustainability Award

The BerliNordik Forum for Sustainable Design has been awarded by the German Council for Sustainable Development (RNE), which is the highest German instition for sustainability.

During the summer 2010, BerliNordik organised three international exhibitions in Berlin, in two of which Hella Hernberg’s Bol lamps were representing Finnish sustainable product design. The exhibitions included also seminars and panel discussions around the concept of sustainability.

The Council for Sustainable Development is the official advisory board of the German government for the field of sustainable developement. The Council selected BerliNordik as one of the most remarkable projects in the field of sustainability. BerliNordik, the project by Create Berlin, INPOLIS UCE GmbH and the International Design Center Berlin is one of the first projects that was presented to the public as an outstanding example for sustainable acting during the Annual Conference of the RNE in Berlin on September 27^th.

Sustainable Luxury in Amsterdam

The next stop for Bol lamps is: Amsterdam. Bol has been invited to participate at the hotel room exhibition Sustainable Luxury taking place during Inside Design Amsterdam 2010. This yearly event is organized by Dutch magazine Elle Wonen (Elle Interiors) and will take place at the enchanting rooms of the Lloyd Hotel on 24-26 September.

The Sustainable Luxury exhibition is organised by Annouk Post, whose blog Hiphonest presents innovative fashion and design made with respect for people as well as the planet. The exhibition introduces new values of luxury in food, fashion, products and art.

BOL Goes to Habitare

Bol lamps will be participating Finland’s biggest design fair, Habitare, this week. The original Bol family members Snowball and Raindrop will be accompanied with two new siblings: Broken Bol and Bol Tellus. Come and have a look! At Habitare, you can also choose from our different material samples and order a custom made Bol lamp.

You’ll find us at the Ahead! area (hall 5), on Wednesday 1.9. and during the weekend 4.-5.9.

This year’s theme at the Ahead! area is synergy, which draws strength from the fruits of cooperation and – rather untypical of the design industry – shifts the attention from individuals to communities: work groups, interest groups and networks of designers, manufacturers, clients and users. The area presents different aspects of the design process each day: Wednesday is the day of designers, Thursday for manufacturers, and Friday for marketing professionals. During the weekend’s design market, young designers will be selling their products to the visitors of the fair.
